While recently watching the show Diggnation, one of the hosts, Kevin Rose, stated that he has been thinking about redirecting his personal blog to his Twitter page. At this point the other host on the show, Alex, told Kevin he didn’t think the idea was a good one. Alex further explained that Kevin would loose money from the ads which his personal site contains. The debate brought up a good debate, should you give up blogging for Tweeting?
There are some advantages that blogging has over tweeting. As pointed out by Alex in the debate, there is ad revenue. If your ad revenue is covering the price of your hosting and domain renewal, you aren’t really loosing any money, and any extra you are actually making a profit. So in this case, blogging would be a benefit. Another benefit of blogging is you are not limited by the length of your post. The 140 character limit on Twitter, really limits what you can express in that amount of characters. If your blog is like PureBlogging, most ideas can not be expressed in 140 characters.
On the other hand, Twitter does have it’s advantages. With Twitter you don’t have overhead cost of hosting and domain renewal. You also don’t have the responsibility to update your blogging software when ever it is updated. This itself can be a huge benefit if updating your blogging software can be a headache. You can express ideas that you can’t really create blog out of, is another advantage.
So as you see, blogging and tweeting has it’s advantages and disadvantages. Each person should access what they think is best for them, but I encourage you to use both. Use your Twitter account to tell people when you updated your blog, and to give more personal information to your followers, like what you think about the restaurant you just ate at. Keep your blog to express more insightful information. One person that has really done well combining the two is Infinity Ward’s (Developers of Call of Duty 4) community manager Robert Bowling aka FourZeroTwo. His blog is used to keep Infinity Ward’s community up to date with the latest news, while his Twitter account will give small but more personal updates.

I agree with you, I would keep both accounts separate. If you’re someone who doesn’t do alot of writing, then maybe Twitter will suffice. However, like you mentioned, with Twitter you’re limited to 140 characters.
It is fairly simple to have both. Use the twitter to lead your readers and followers to your blog.
wow, this is a good debate. But after using both, I think the best long term option is blogging. I mean, Twitter is cool, but you are only restricting yourself to a small amount of people or targeted audience. You could find more potential clients for your products through blogging. I mean, especially if your blog is geared towards a specific niche.
I use twitter to market my specific non-product niche sites like my gaming website and eCommerce store, but for landing pages and niche products blogging is definitely the way to go.
Of course, it can’t hurt to use both methods on both types
Both!
For me blogging and tweeting is different. Twitter is built with this one basic purpose. “Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?”
And I do agree with Nicole. If you have lots of followers. twitter could give an extra exposure for your blog.
For forums like mine that’s pretty much the ideal solution. Someone posts in a thread, it provides a nifty way for them to know they now owe a reply. I haven’t fully implemented it, but in my case I think I’m going to look into using Twitter to keep my community’s activity up.
I wouldn’t dream of directing people straight to twitter, though, even or especially for the blogs. If I get a few members from twitter, awesome, but that’s not my goal with it, personally.
I think you can leverage both at the same time with for better results than either on their own.
Blogging lets you produce more indepth content. Twitter lets you get that quick train of thought up on the web while standing in line at Starbucks.
Combine their powers and it’s one big super hero.
Yeh, better to have both
It’s better to have both – but I will have to admit, I don’t even have a twitter account (gasp). It seems like I’m always slow out of the gate.
Whatever can make communication faster and smoother – I’m all for it.
Dickies Pants and Shirts
I agree is it easy to do both, so no reason to choose. But also I still don’t see much advantage to twitter for most bloggers. In a few cases it may make sense but overall it doesn’t do much, better than a blog does, for a blogger. There are many who are not going to blog, or take the time to create posts, for those twitter can be useful.
I have a blog for my twitters and my latest twitters in my regular blog. So both works just fine for me.
Plus how hard is it really to update wordpress.
At this point, I prefer blogging to tweeting. However, after reading your article, I will try to do both. I usually forget to update my twitter page, so I’ll have to make sure I keep it up to date.
Both are distinctly different mediums with very different approaches so comparing them is difficult. Microblogging is evolving as a very different format and has been integrated into social networks in a big way. How this will all play out remains to be seen, but by and large the blogging world seems to be a very different one.
Still haven’t found the time to Twitter…I must be the last person alive who hasn’t.
I honestly like blogging more. Yes Twitter is great to read tidbits of information and get the latest scoop, but if you want to know more about the subject at hand then blogging is the way to go.
Surely it would be hard to go only with one. Twitter is made to be as a some kind of service to bloggers, so we really can’t say they are opponents.
I’m not to into twitter. To short of messages and who has time to post 20 messages a day? Blogs FTW
Have a blog and use twitter to promote it!
I don’t think there is a question of oposing sides when it comes to twitter and blogging.
In my opinion they both compliment each other well and its wise to have both in order to fully maximise and harness the true web 2.0 power.
I agree to what you’ve said that its’ better to use both..
I blog at my own blog at use twitter to market
Cheers
Sandeep
I personally love to blog but of course, pulling in more readers through Twitter is always a good way to go. Plus updating Twitter takes a minute, so it is not hard to upkeep.
I think the both work hand in hand I cant see giving up a successful blog just to concentrate on twitter would be a good idea, the more avenue to your products/services the more sales you will make.
Great post I really like that. Nice service to bloggers,
thankyou for iformation.
yes, great article
yes, great article
Twitter is great, but it’s a bit like staying in on a saturday night. Blogging is fun because you get out and about.
There is definitely space for both platforms in cyberspace, and there is huge synergy too. Twitter can serve to drive really nice traffic to your website, and I prefer using it as opposed to RSS feeds to see where there has been updates.
I caught that episode too. Microblogging is on a different level than regular blogging. I guess it’s all in how he plans on using it, but I think Twitter alone would be limiting for him.
I love both! I cannot compare
.
I hardly ever use my blogs now, which is a shame but it’s so much easier.
Blogging actually takes effort, time and thought to construct well written posts. A Tweet can just be blown out in seconds.
That’s a great discussion, but I think it is not worth stop blogging for tweeting. The revenue that comes from blogging advertises is very important for the business.
i like a both of them
Another agreement for both, always room for more!
Twitter will be dead in 5-6 months. And what after that? I think a better idea would be to do both – keep most interesting stuff for your blog and twitter only random thoughts and links.
Derald, I think Twitter’s value was overestimated.
I see the beginning of the trend that many entrepreneurs abandon Twitter as a marketing tool due to its low effect. This may bring some traffic but it’s hard to monetize that traffic.
Both are on the same path.
Twitter helps a blogger spreading out the good news of his blog and sending in followers to enjoy his/her offers.
though not frequently use twitter, i gain something good (traffic) out of it.
surely it would be blogging… blogging is the best way to get targeted traffic. on blogging u can use SEO.
There is no way that twitter is on the same level of blogging. I don’t think you would be taken seriously if all you had was a twitter account. As Nicole suggests, having both is the best way to go.
-Randy
You have the point here, Derald. I usually thought it isn’t a nice move to redirecting our website to Twitter, as it would distract our loyal readers away from it!
I see twitter as a sub set of blogging. As it name says, its a micro blogging tool isn’t it?
I’m fully agreed with your comment. What i think is twitter is far ahead from blogging..
I thinking blogging is better…. I hate all this twitter talk
I guess micro blogging was a short-lived trend while twitter in general is picking steam – thanks to numerous twitter directories and tools. However, I feel that it’s becoming more and more spammy in nature and you can never compare twitter to blogging. Both vary drastically…
Twitter was intended to be the micro-blogging thingie (as Ben Pie said) but not anymore.
well i think both of them go side by side adding some one to your follower is something like getting life time visitor of your blog isn’t so :-S
Better to utilize both. Both are great tool as of this time.
Hi mate How did you put those smilies in here?
Which plugin you are using for that?
both of them have their own feature! so i will not give up either of them. maybe facebook will integrate both of them in someday
Indeed, both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Its up for the user to choose which among the two will satisfy his purpose. Moreover, he can use both if he wants to.
Twitter is a sort of microblogging, but I think i will be sticking to full pledge blogging. Just like you said they have disadvantages and advantages.
What the sense to have a twitter? I cant catch many peoples with this tipe of blogging. I do prefer all my ideas, and information publish to websites – they are more suitable for classical SEO…
Honestly, I rarely use my Twitter account to inform people about my blogs’ updating, as I mostly used it to chat with my followers about their daily stuffs!
I have reasons not to use Twitter as I find that it is getting to be unamangeable.
@Nicole, great point, I think that is definitely one of the flaws that Twitter has, I know alot of my friends express this same thought.
Till then,
Jean
Hm.. Sounds like the nature vs. nurture debate. Its silly to compare them. What’s better, what’s right to have them both as one. Nature via vurture. I would suggest tweeting to help your blog.
I would agree that its really better to have both. Twitter is basically an evolution of blogs, and many think it is more active than most blogs, which is probably somewhat true. However, I think people will always want to have their own, branded blog as well as having something on a big network like twitter or what comes next to promote it.
Its not like Twitter is the first thing like this to come along.
it’s a superficial debate, you cannot really compare them…so, i use both
I know a person who has best utilised the power of Twitter in his blog. He is Mr. Micah and his blog is here http://learntoduck.com/micah/
Thanks for this nice post.
Twitter is my fun marketing tool. I agree with ben pei when he qouted “micro blogging”. Though sadly many affiliate marketeers are abusing it.
Twitter is also a great way to engage and build relationships with your niche and readers outside your blog. It’s a suppliment to blogging, so blogging still reigns.
I agree with Nicole Price…
Emmmm… I think it’s the best conclusion
I agree with Nicole Price.. Just have both.. And It’s fine..
Many of my favorite blogs have twitter updates only each day and I am wondering why they are not blogging anymore but twittering. To be very true, it is not a good habit.
Well twitter is my first choice. Blogging is to quite good to make your presence stronger..
I don’t think so that twitter can turn around blogging. Because is something very comprehensive on the other hand twitter only gives 140 words to express you so it can be a good traffic driving tool to your website but can’t take place of a blog, that’s what i consider may be other buddies having different views.
My opinion, twitter is marketing tools that can be used to get subscriber or follower, so if there is fresh news or offer, can be distribute in twitter.
Well I used both off them, both are my favorite in internet publishing, sometimes I twittering sometimes blogging
Social media sites and specially Twitter has become a very important tool to promote a blog but a blog can can be promoted in a hundred more ways. In no way can twitter be a replacement for a blog.
Twitter is good for quick updates and promotion of your new posts (if your users hate rss for some reason). But apart from that I don’t really see a point in twitting.
It depends on what do you need.
Since i joined Twitter i stopped . it was pointless to use them both. Anyway sometimes those 140 symbols in twitter are just not enough to write all the stuff id wanna tell..
I have been amazed at the growth of Twitter recently. But I just can’t see the appeal of it. I mean, what can you say that’s worth reading in only 140 characters?
Still, it seems that everyone who has got a blog is also on Twitter as well. So I feel that as a blogger I’m really missing out on something.
Trouble is, even if I decide to open a Twitter account I don’t think I’ll have the time to update it enough to get any benefit.
Think I’ll just stick to blogging.
I also feel Kevin Rose is not making right decision. I will never ever give up blogging for Tweeting. Blogging brings much needed ad revenue to webmasters like me, so why I would ever give up blogging.
I consider tweeting as one of the method to promote my blog. Nothing more that that.
All I can say is. There are more SPAMMERS in Twitter than in Blogging.
Ad revenue is important in defraying costs. After you reach break even, blogging becomes more fun. Less stress always equals more fun.
The other consideration is, of course, control. Blogging on your own domain, you don’t have to worry about changes in terms of service. Your content cannot be held hostage.
So I’ll stick to blogging for now.
I do like the instant gratification of Twitter, though
I actually havent found twitter very useful. May be I don’t know how to use it properly. Does anyone have article/video that explains it.
Twitter can compliment your blogging by providing you with another medium through which to reach readers.
Twitter can compliment your blogging by providing you with another medium through which to reach your readers.
Why not just do both? Thats what I do. Twitter is amazing.
You wouldnt use Twitter to replace your blogging. You should really be using Twitter to complement your blog. Twitter allows you to promote your blog, while also giving status updates on other areas of interest. So really the question is more like “Should I blog AND twitter?”
Personally, I would keep two separate stuffs for tweeting and blogging. When compared to tweeting, Blogging gives a better margin of income. So, Kevin needs to change his idea.
It is good to use both in concert with another. If I ha to pick one over the other, it would be blogging, no question.
I usually use twitter over blogging whenever I want to have a quick update about my current activities/status. But if I’ll be asked if which to use, I will still prefer blogging. Twitting is just not enough for me to express a lot of things.
I guess I fall in line with just about everybody else who has chimed in here…I don’t think it’s an either/or scenario. I think it’s a bit like choosing between USA Today and the Wall Street Journal. Two different purposes and methods of delivering information. I think the smart blogger/webmaster will find ways to take advantage of both mediums!
definitely both !
i like to have more control over what i want to blog about, and how much i want to say about something
Wow, this issue/blog just heated up. In my case, I use them both, Just what Nicole Price said, use twitter to drive traffic to your blog.
I think it depends upon the intention of a person.
right?
Twitter is really nothing more than a tiny blog post. Like a mini blog LOL. You can (and should) really use blogging and twitter together. Just twitter about every blog you post. It is a both scenario just like Harv Eker teaches in Millionaire Mind
Both twitter and blogger has its own advantages and disadvantages but our ultimate goal is to how to use both of them to get targeted traffic to our site. So use both with positive manner which can benefit your business.
Both have their own places but the point is we should use them in the positive way (traffic wise), so that it can benefit our site.
I have a blog for my twitters and my latest twitters in my regular blog. So both works just fine for me.
Plus how hard is it really to update wordpress.
I use both Twitter and blog as well. As you have said, I use Twitter to tell people when I’ve updated my blog or just to give them recent news so that they become interested in me. This might them convert into good traffic coming to my blog…Thanks for the information.
i think using both of these can make tha best result

I don´t understand the Twitter hype.
i’ll say definitely blogging , twitter is going to disappear soon as it’s useless
You are right, I’ve always believed that it’s a definite disadvantage to leave blogging for Tweeting. The 140 chars obviously limits what you have to say. If blogging and tweeting is combined effectively, it can become profitable.
