PureBlogging » Blog Archive » Facebookers Are Blogging And Don’t Even Know It!

Ever since the large social networking site Facebook developed and added a Notes section to their interface, it has gotten a lot of attention from the service’s users–bloggers and non-bloggers alike.

The Notes composition section (pictured above) provides a look much like any other blogging platform’s compositional area, including both a Subject line and a multi-line text area for the content/message.

Notes has become a very popular area on Facebook, where users post quizzes, rants, memes, and so forth. With this premise, the usual FB users engaging in the Notes section would not consider themselves as bloggers, but those who are involved in the blogosphere with other blogs (not associated with FB) tied into their profile do admit to themselves as blogging.

What are your thoughts on Notes on Facebook and how it ties into blogging?

Certainly social networkings are coming together and complimenting each other very well. Squidoo are coming close to facebook, facebook and twitter using some application so that each other can be linked.

So in coming days this will be related to each other.

You are right. It has become a forum blog. But, if you are a blogger, then its functionality disturbs your own blog. One has to strike a balance.

Like Nicole said, the functions are very poor. It’s more like a diary, or I don’t know what, but in my eyes a blogger is using a real blogging platform (self-hosted wordpress, blogger blog or squidoo, etc).

Cheers,

The Moneyac

A couple of my friends use it for daily thoughts, ramblings..etcetera. The kind of stuff you find on personal blogs. The only thing is.. on facebook.. everybody knows you just posted something because it appears on their page.

So we’ve got another blogging platform. Maybe not the real blog but probably a chance to see how it is and start a real blog.
Nevertheless, it’s a good idea.

As some of the other comments have pointed out, it has poor tools. I wouldn’t consider this part of social networking a blog as such, litterally just a “note” I suppose.

Yeah I agree it is considered just as a note. Functions are horrible.

Exactly! A lot of my friends post those pass along notes, and random throughts, ideas and rants – it does sound like blogging. And it’s a good thing if you don’t have followers in your blog. At least in Facebook, people are notified. And they might *just at least* take notice of what you want to say.

Hello,

I also think it goes to the different uses and puroposes of social media. I am friends with lots of people on Twitter because it is a lighter and faster medium. Just like I would talk to lots of people at a cocktail party. Linkedin is much closer to my circle of close friends, or at least business associates. I have about 5 times more followers on Twitter than I have friends on facebook or LinkedIn.

That’s not blogging, that’s more of a personal diary with random thoughts, quotes, comments, anything… It’s good for a teenager, or a housewife, or a SEO specialist (to gain more links, when possible :) ), but I would never treat such a “blog” as a serious source of information.

I agree with Billy, You could never treat such a blog as a serious source of information. And I am just concerned where all those MySpace Facebooks are going in meaning of social life if you understand me?

While I will agree that these aren’t really blogs, I have to say they are getting more and more people into the mindset of blogging, and I’ve seen a lot my friends actually go out and start their own website after having fun with it in FB.

Facebook is great, except for the fact that their content doesn’t get trawled by the search engine bots, and that means the blogging aspect might never reach facebook maturity. I like the funtionality though, and feel that it will open the door for many more people to express themselves on the internet without having to have their own blog and getting involved in managing the backend of such a project.

I never thought of notes as blogging, you are so right, it has become famous especially those lists that people make where you have to tag others, those notes spread virally

I think facebook is good but the effective use of the site require hiring full time marketers to maintain the process of acquiring fb traffic, Also we have no info about someone who succeeded this type of marketing

As long as you make notes or make something readable on the net with a pesonal touch, I consider it blogging.

For the average small-business, I don’t see much benefit in having Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and whatever else profiles.

It’s “cool” and all… but from what people tell me, unless you are in music or sell a relatively inexpensive product, Social Sites really aren’t the best way to use your time for Business!

I am sorry but I think its wierd to link blogging with facebook. Or rather ranting is not equal to blogging.

There are also others that are utilizing the social networks, and having a great success with it, but, the catch is some of them don’t even know that with all the success they’ve built they could have easily become richer because of it.

most facebook users don’t know what a blog is and they cant consider them selves something that they don’t know. I consider it blogging but to each is own.

I hate web 2.0. Everyone is posting everything they want all around the web. The blogs are visible everywhere. I just can’t wait till it ends. I mean it’s nice to have so much information on everything but the problem is that most people have no idea what they’re talking about. And uneducated information is worse than no information at all. And while facebook notes are mostly used for spreading people’s opinions, regular blogs are often used for “teaching stuff”. And I’m affraid not everyone is qualified for that.

There is also a FaceBook blogging tool which hosts a blog on FaceBook but which can only be updated from within it.
