Blogging has really emerged in this past year (2008). It has become more of a household term, and been more widely used than any other years past. This is because of blogging being mentioned immensely through various mediums such as social media/networking, TV, and radio.
One of the biggest ways that blogging has emerged this is year is the election. Various bloggers and blog circles came into the limelight to help persuade/sway your decision on political aspects, such as CNN, and NPR (National Public Radio).
Even the President political candidates had blogs integrated within their own campaign websites (e.g. Barack Obama and John McCain).
According to Trendpedia, there were approximately 8,687 election-related posts made on the day of the returns. That may seem like a small number, but that is a lot of bloggers being active on such an eventful day.
With this being said, whatever is happening in the media, expect that it will be blogged about. For example, a Blagojevich blog dedicated to the Illinois seat scandal, and New Years Eve @ Times Square, NYC.
What will be the trends and direction of blogging in 2009? We shall see!

2008 has definitely been the year that blogging has come of age… before that many people just saw bloggers as technical people sitting at home in their pyjamas.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens in 2009 but perhaps blogs will start expanding more into actual online communities.
Blogging will only continue to grow in 2009 because large companies are starting to join in on the festivites creating their own company blogs.
Everywhere it is said the blogging has become a sector of market with its millions, network and even its own dresscode-pyjamas. Where should you know they are wearing pyjamas?
I suspect that in 2009, the thrust of bloggers will be on the economy, employment and the initiatives taken by the new President.
Incidentally, I did not get an opportunity to do this earlier. Here is wishing you a very happy new year.
It also occurs to me that the situation in Israel/Palestine and India/Pakistan is likely to be somewhat heavy in posts.
haha, I love that obama has a blog
It is seen blogging gets started expanding greatly. It is the normal tendency of the new business.
Happy New Year to everyone! I became a blogger a few years ago and I can’t really say I post very often, but it fills a need for me. I really enjoy it. I will never be a professional blogger, but that is okay. I am glad to see that blogging is getting more respect, though.
I agree. Barrack Obama is the first President in the world that blogs. Our ex-PM Tun Mahathir also blog in Malaysia. Blogging is increasingly gaining its popularity as a secondary household income for many and during recession time, we can see more people turns to bloggers.
Blogging is perfect for niche markets, communities and groups. Blogs throughout 2009 wil continue to be an excellect source for sharing knowledge, beliefs and comments.
may luck be with you all in 2009!
Don’t think Obama will have the time to blog anymore now that he’s running the show..
will he still have the time to blog now..?
While I do think the growth has been because of yearly events, that is always the case with blogs, it is not the reason why blogging has gotten bigger. It’s gotten bigger simply because of the viral nature of it and how it connect people. The media could have a completely uneventful 2009 and blogging will still grow. The media is shifting to an online focus now so classic systems like radio and TV are becoming less and less impactful.
Blogging really made revolution on internet in past year.. And i am sure it will expand more in this year with even more social media opportunities that are being integrated together.
You see blogging everywhere now - even Google is doing it (kind of with Matt Cutts). It’s really great to see things liek social media and blogging are coming to the fore in terms of Google and SEO - it’s time that the idea of web 2.0 really came to fruition.
Blogging definitely grew rapidly in 2008. I know that I started blogging last year (2008), and immediately was sucked in by this wonderful circle/sphere.
I want to go bigger and more committed to my blogging this year, as it’s a beautiful outlet for all individuals to have their thoughts heard by the world.
I think blogging will totally over shadow print media this year, plus there’s also been an increase of blog host companies coming into being.
I think with the downturn in the economy, poised to go yet further down this year, we’ll see an influx of blogs from both “finance gurus” bemoaning the situation and offering solutions, as well as former employees, now looking for work, weighing in on the situation.
The historic presidential election of this year should yield a fairly significant spike up in new blogs, too, now that I think about it.
What’s the general consensus on whether or not a blog is essential to the website of a regular business with some web presence?
Everything is indeed blogged about at the moment. All the big companies and campaigns are using blogs. It might be a negative thing for some bloggers, however, it brings more press to blogs and may be very beneficial.
Eventually all will be blogging, even my mom and dad. We have to realize that we live in 21. century, century of big and rapid changes. You can persist on, not to change, but sooner or later all will be forced to change..
Yes blogging has grown quite a bit since last year. It’s a combination of stuff really. Politics certainly generated traffic last year! Other than that I think people are really starting to see the potential in the web for another source of income, especially during the rotting (and still rotting) economy!
till then,
Jean
