Is Using a Hosted Blog Service Appropriate? | PureBlogging

David Peralty at Branding David has a post up that says it’s a big mistake to host your business blog on a hosted service. He makes the following points

- Bad for Branding

- Bad for Control

- Bad for User Experience

- Bad for SEO

He of course elaborates on each of these, and to be honest, his points are hard to argue with. Still, this doesn’t mean that using a hosted service is always inappropriate. Marshall Kirkpatrick shares some pros and cons on the matter.

“If blogging makes up less than 60% of your work, it might make sense to just go through a hosted service and leave the bulk of the set up and maintenance to them,” he concludes.

Looking around to see what others think, the general consensus seems to view hosted services as being best for amateurs, whereas serious bloggers who are counting on their blogs as their main source of income would do better to do the hosting themselves.

Your take on the matter? Anyone finding great success using a hosted service?

Please remember, that I am focusing in on businesses rather than bloggers looking to make money online. There is a difference ;)

Bloggers looking to make money online are fine to use anything they deem fit for pursuing their goals. Corporate/Business blogs should be on their own site/server.

Yes, I would say that’s true. Especially when it comes to branding. Having your own full domain is advantageous for branding and adds more legitabilty to your business. Plus you won’t have much control over it if it’s a hosted blog, if the main host domain gets blacklisted by search engines, then your site will suffer too.

Well, it really depends, but if someone wants to make real results and attention he must at least have his own domain and hosting. That is a must step these days. I think that hosted services are for family people who post stories and stuff to share with their relatives and friends. If you want to get attention you must have your own hosting and domain.

If I were running a brick and mortar business I would use a dedicated server. A blog would just be one section of the website. Anything less would look unprofessional.

I entirely agree with David. The hosted sites have their own agendas which need not necessarily complement the blogger’s interests.

This is a good idea to make the hosting by yourself but for most it’s rather difficult

We do not endorse any of these services. You should select a blog-hosting service that meets your specific needs. Many of the services’ elements below are marked with a + for a positive aspect of the service, - for a negative, and = for an aspect that is neutral.

A good hosted blog service is crucial for building a good blog though. If it is not reliable, people may not be able to visit the blog and leaving it without reading it and won’t come back to read it the next time.

Really depends on the situation. Hosted for simple blogging and others for more complex stuff.

Being invested in a hosting service for websites, I hadn’t considered hosting my blog there. It’s been a hobby and a place to present samples to sell writing services. I’m in the exploring stage of promotion of the blog and will consider the advantages.

I couldn’t stand not having 100% control over my blog. I could never do the hosted services like blogger.
