Blog action day is a day out of the year where bloggers are called upon to discuss important topics to spread awareness. This year, that topic is poverty. The aim is to trigger a “global discussion.”
Blog Action Day 2008 Poverty from Blog Action Day on Vimeo.
At the Blog Action Day Website, they say, “Every blogger has a unique voice, audience and perspective. By speaking to their readers on topic about an important issue we can discuss global issues like poverty in a new and hugely multi-faceted way. And from discussion springs action.”
They highlight examples of what different types of blogs can do to participate:
- A Design Blog might analyse a set of charity posters and how they convey their message.
- A Tech Blog might look at pro-poor technologies and projects.
- A Political Blog might examine the relevant agendas of leading candidates.
- A Sports Blog might look at recent charity activities of a major sports franchise.
Since we are a blog about blogging, I think the fact that I’m writing about Blog Action Day itself should suffice. That said, I still welcome comments regarding the issue at hand – Poverty. Or you can discuss the significance of Blog Action Day itself.

i do feel that the internet can make a difference in this regard.
for my part, i turn to sites like freerice, kiva, and goodsearch, as ways to help alleviate poverty online.
saw this post via the front page of blog action day. it’s great that you’re participating.
I’m participating in Blog Action Day…and wrote a blog about it but honestly I struggled with writing about this topic…for me in order to eradicate its about so much more than blogging and words…but blogging did help to bring it to the forefront and I hope that all of will go a little further and also give of our time, talent and tithes to this cost.
The huge amount of poverty still in place today is hidden from the eyes of many. Kiva, is nice site that connects those who can lend $25 to those that need those loans to build up their businesses and improve financially.
What I find interesting is that Blog Action Day calls for anyone, no matter how knowledgeable they are on a topic to blog about it. The list of possible topics based on type of blog is nice, but this seems more like a homework assignment focused on linking.
Yes, there will be some ‘awareness’ that seeps out, but for the most part this seems more like a ‘chic’ thing to do.
Maybe I am wrong, but wanted to start a discussion.
You may have a valid point with the linking factor, but the concept of a global discussion on a pressing issue is intriguing nonetheless. The key word is discussion. You’re also right that not everyone is going to be knowledgeable about the subject at hand, but that’s the beauty of the blogosphere. Discussion, discussion, discussion.
