I’m not sure how unique some of those actually are. Unless we’re just judging stand-out blogs by loud or colourful banner design.

Some of them are initially striking visually, but the designs themselves don’t stand out. For real impact I’d like to see some alternative approaches to the standard blog posts main column/about+recent visitors+advert right column layout.

Robin,
Are there any in particular that you think are fairly standard? I agree that the layout of most of these is pretty typical, but the graphics, illustration, and other design elements make them stand out to me.

Just out of interest, how did you come to find the blogs in the first place?

I found most of them through web design galleries.

Very nice. You are so right. Unfortunately, for me, knowing that a great design is important isn’t the same thing as having a great design.

Yes, if only it were that easy.

Some of these designs are extremely creative. I’m especially appreciative of the last one, who knew a mouth could act as a good housing for content.

Nice selection. I would have chosen Web Desigern Wall over ma.tt - bit of a ip in my opinion.

“Mostly Lisa” was the most interesting for me. Maybe because of the beautiful woman in the header

I’m am sure not an artist so much of these designs are outside of my grasp. Though I can code, and my girlfriend is an artist.

hmmm… that gives me an idea!

Nice graphics on some of them but I feel there were a number which were not too easy to read. Do you not feel that many of the blogs today seem to be concentrating more on design, graphics and advertising rather than content and comment?

Ken,
That’s a very valid point. I think we all agree that readability is key for blogs. In reference to the blogs listed with, there’s only a couple that I personally had an issue with. Even though these specific examples may not fit with what you like in a blog, I think they at least show creativity. Maybe that is something that can be used in a different way that will still allow for readability. My intent was to show some inspiration designs that prove that blogs don’t have to fit into a box. But you’re right, readability shouldn’t be sacrificed at the expense of design.

Very nice & different themes. While I was searching for the themes,I reject all the themes which do not have professional look. I blindly without thinking about creativity i reject all. But now i think that readability matter’s not the professional look.

All good examples of mixing fresh design with user readability.

Some of the blogs i see sacrifice the ease of reading the articles with poor designs

Pretty cool graphics, though I’d love to see more Flash integration. I just finished my green blog, which has HD video in the header. I think, no offense to anyone, video integration, especially with the new compression tools in CS4, is the wave of the future.
