Excellent article. I hear a lot that page rank makes no difference but you make a great case when you say how could that be. It does not make any sense that it would not. At the last update my website and blog both moved to PR 4 and these sites moved up in the serps for all of my competitive search terms. It has to make a difference. I also like your rational about having links on lower PR sites.

We have a saying in NE Ohio: If you don't like the weather, just wait. It will change.

I kind of feel the same way about SEO. Not that the change will be for the better, but it will change.

Thanks for this post. That last pagerank change knocked Chaseblogger went from a 4 to a big fat zero. I was very discouraged and kind of gave up the fight. I think I better strap on my boots and get back on it!

Good backlinks are always going to be important for search engine optomization. Pagerank just measures this. So I don't think it will ever be dead, nor do I think it is truly that important.

maybe that after the google slap, a lot of sites criticised the PR. but a larger issue is at hands. PR lays premium not only on the links in your site but also their quality. but at the same time the quality of your own site should not be compromised. but i really got know the functioning of page rank from here.

Jim,

Great job summing up your argument and I completely agree with you. After last fall's Google slap, we all learned the hard way that we need to pay a lot more attention to the type and quality of our links. I think some people just didn't want to go to all that trouble so they proclaimed Page Rank stupid and irrelevant. Yes, in the post-slap world I think you can survive without an eye on your PR, but why would you want to?

The real point isn't about PR, it's about link building in general. It will never be a good time to stop trying to get quality incoming links. Regardless of whether or not Google "counts" in the long run, attracting relevant links from popular sites and blogs should always be something for which we strive.

If people want to look at Google as some big-bad monster that is somehow out to knock down their chances of success, then that's their choice. However, I think PR really levels and playing field by judging everyone on the same set of criteria. And it also works as a good baseline for how well your website is building incoming links.

Good post.

It looks as if Google PR is roughly a base 8 multiplier:

A PR 2 is "worth" about 8 PR 1, PR 3 about 8 PR 2, etc.

Of course it's not just PR that is considered, it's the content and number of links on the page pointing to yours.

Pursuing relevant page rank will be, for the time being, a good idea.

For me PR is a result of links. It tells me how well I have done in building backlinks. The more quality backlinks I have the more higher PR I get, I believe PR do helps rank higher, but it's because of quality backlinks.
