I know Twitter has been around for a while, but I hadn’t got into it until recently. We all have the same number of hours in a day. Did I really have time for YASN (yet another social network)? I already can barely keep up with email, feeds, blogging at my own blogs, working on stuff for clients, and my day job (not to mention family, friends, and some kind of life). Would Twitter be a huge waste of my time? A soul-sucking drain on my resources? After all, I deactivated my Facebook account and haven’t really used Pownce for months. Would Twitter be any different?

Turns out the answer is a big fat YES! Twitter is truly social and I have been improving my relationships with people in my network. There is little spam because people are concerned about not “polluting their own pond.” It’s faster and easier than email for staying in touch. The 140-character limit forces me to say only that which is essential.

Twitter is not for spammers–if you don’t bring value to the table, you will have few if any followers. You can even set it so that only those you choose will see your tweets, making them private and exclusive.

My experience with Twitter has been nothing but positive. So, to answer the question posed in the headline: Twitter has not hurt my blogging. It has strengthened my relationships with others… and that is nothing but good for my blog. And that is, I feel, the important connection between any kind of social media and blogging.

Great point Michael.

I started using twitter a few months ago and it has brought me closer to a lot of people!

Darin, since I wrote this post I’ve also received guest-blogging opportunities and even a paid gig through twitter. So now I believe in it even more.
