I was just trying to figure out how to work a widget and ended up here. I think this is great advice. One thing I enjoy about the group of blogs I read is that most of the people write for the sheer joy of writing - and a great deal of them are people who love to read, as well as keep up with their friends. I think it's nice to make money doing something you enjoy - but it takes a lot of the fun out of it when that's the only reason you're doing it.

I used to teach English, so I always appreciate preaching content.

I've never heard of a Blog Carnival. Do they have blog cotton candy??

It’s pretty tough to do all of these things, so I think it’s good to focus on a few and do them as well as you can.

I agree. There are also a lot of other things that bloggers do that I didn't cover. Pick a few things and work at them consistently. Keep going until you see results.

Quality content is always the way to go. People get caught up in traffic building techniques and loose sight of the fact that the key to success is more about retaining readers. In the overall scheme of things, attracting traffic is the easy part.

No, it's not your imagination. I can't believe the number of blogs I've found where the blogger is so interested in forcing in their keyword phrases that the content doesn't even make sense. It catches Google attention, but I can't imagine readers sticking around long enough to do any good.

It's refreshing to see more solid advice as apposed to all the gimicky, black hat, "make money online" tripe. Sure, some of it works, but I think there is a growing number of bloggers who want solid advice on how to grow and do it the right way, a way that will sustain them vs having to find the next "trick". I like seeing people suggesting things like reaching out to other bloggers via guest posts, commenting, linking often, networking! People who create great content and contribute will get noticed. The rest are just praying the next Google update doesn't sweep them under the rug.

Good points Jim. Guest posting was a great experience for me as it helped me to meet a lot of other bloggers and get my name out there a little bit. It's pretty tough to do all of these things, so I think it's good to focus on a few and do them as well as you can.

Excellent post Jim! I was starting to think I was going about things the wrong way by wanting to build up my content before working on bringing traffic in, other newbie bloggers I see seem to be working their arses off pulling traffic in to their blogs which maybe only hold five or six posts.

I want to focus on building up high quality content which will really hold the readers attention before pulling traffic in.

Kevin, it's not in your imagination! I have come across blogs with posts that contain plenty of keywords and not much more.

I think in the long run one of the biggest deciders in whether a blog will fail or succeed will come down to content.
