Most bloggers will eventually face the decision of running multiple blogs or focusing on just one. Of course this is a decision that should be made carefully and there is no right or wrong answer, everyone’s situation is unique. Ultimately, this decision may affect the level of quality of your blog(s) and how much time you have to write, maintain, and promote.
Advantages of Running Multiple Blogs:
1. Greater Income Potential - The primary reason behind most decisions to run multiple blogs is the increase in income potential. While you can always work to increase the amount of money that you make from any one blog, you can ultimately create even more by successfully launching and maintaining another blog.
2. More Stable Income - If all of your blogging income is tied to one particular blog, you are always going to have a certain degree of risk. If something happens to that blog your income could quickly disappear. Spreading your income out over a few different blogs will reduce the risk of any one blog not producing. If that happens you’ll still have income from another blog, or possibly several other blogs.
3. Transfer of Readers - If you run multiple blogs that cover related topics there is a good chance that some of your readers would be interested in reading your other blogs as well. This works especially well if you have at least one established blog with a significant audience. Launching a new blog on a related topic may produce results much faster because you can send some of those existing readers to the new blog.
4. Increased Exposure - Part of successful blogging is building your profile and gaining exposure. Running multiple blogs gives you the opportunity for more exposure and ability to become recognized as a leader in your field.
5. Leverage What You’ve Already Learned - Blogging is a constant learning experience. Writing new content and marketing your blog will be much easier as time goes on because of the things that you learn along the way. When you start a new blog you’ll be starting with the knowledge and experience that you’ve already gained from your other projects. What you learn can be applied multiple times rather than just once.
6. Potentially Larger Audience - Almost every blog wants to be able to reach a larger audience. Of course this is possible by growing an existing blog, but running multiple blogs makes it even more possible. The total audience that you reach through all of your blogs may be larger than anything you could accomplish with just one blog.
7. Increased Networking Opportunities - One of the most important things you can do to improve your blog is to network with other bloggers. Having multiple blogs may help to bring up new networking opportunities.
8. Improve Your Value to Your Network - One of the vital parts of networking is being able to help others. If you have multiple blogs you’ll have a chance to increase your value to those in your network. For example, instead of having the ability to link to a friend from one blog, you’ll have the opportunity to do so from 2 or more blogs, which could create more exposure for your friends.
9. Cover Multiple Topics - Maybe there is a topic that you would love to write about but it just doesn’t fit with your blog. If this is the case, starting another blog could give you the opportunity to cover other topics.
10. Better Offers to Advertisers - Many bloggers that run multiple blogs have some type of package offer to advertisers to advertise on all of their blogs at a discounted rate. This can be a good deal for advertisers and it can make your life easier by taking less time to fill your ad spots.
Disadvantages of Running Multiple Blogs:
1. Time Commitment - Of course the major disadvantage to running multiple blogs is that it will take more time than running one blog. This is the most common reason for bloggers choosing to stick with just one. Each blogger needs to evaluate how much time they have available and how much time a new blog would require. One method that some people use to solve this problem is to hire others to write some or all of the blog posts. This can be a great decision if you are able to maintain and increase profitability with this strategy, or it can be a horrible decision if you spend more than these writers produce for you.
2. Suffering Quality - It’s very possible that running multiple blogs will cause you to spread yourself too thin, which will ultimately affect the quality of all of your work. If this is the case, you’re likely to be better off sticking with just one blog and doing what you can to make it as high quality as possible.
3. Blogging Burnout - The increased responsibilities of running multiple blogs can also cause you to get burnt out. The best way to avoid this is to carefully consider how much time a new project will require, and by choosing topics that you are passionate about. You’ll reach burnout much faster by forcing yourself to write about topics that don’t really interest you.
4. The Need to Find More Advertisers - Most blogs produce income by selling ad space. Many times finding advertisers will require some effort on the part of the blogger. In this case, multiple blogs would mean more work to find and maintain advertisers.
What’s Your Opinion?
Do you run multiple blogs or do you focus on one? What are your reasons for this decision? Also, please feel free to add anything that you feel was missed in the comments.

running only one is the best. You can focus on it better and get better income!
Having only one blog is certainly the best option for some people, but I don’t think you can make an absolute statement one way or the other.
depending on your time and competence I think the advantages of multiple blogs outweigh the negatives
Time is definitely the main limitation.
Generally, I recommend running as many blogs (or any other type of website, for that matter) as you can handle without having to compromise as far as quality is concerned because, once it becomes too much for you, certain projects end up being neglected and that is always something you should avoid.

More sites definitely allows you to diversify a little bit, but you’re right, when it drops the level of productivity it becomes a negative.
Hi,
I just started two more blogs after having one for almost a year. I think having more blogs is definitely giving me blogging burnout (I also started writing for two other blogs), but I have very limited time (that I probably need to manage a little better).
I am having fun starting them, though, and I learned a lot from my primary blog. I had started another one that I have since given up, but marketing was my biggest problem with it.
Burnout is definitely more likely if you run more blogs. I think the key is to stick with topics that you really enjoy and to be honest with yourself about what you can handle. Like Alan said above, if it hurts your productivity it’s not a good thing. Thanks for your feedback.
Indeed since, let’s face it, one good blog is always far better than multiple neglected ones. If your schedule only allows you to handle one blog then launching others if you know that you are unable to invest the necessary time into managing them is not an option.

Thanks for the tips! Currently I run two blogs of my own, so these tips were very helpful. I just started my second blog (www.mistisandefur.com/discover_souther_illinois/) and have been running the first one for over two years. I don’t know about everyone else, but for me, this topic was timely.
I have no additional tips to add as I believe you covered it well. Who knows, though, later down the road as my experience running two blogs increases, I may discover something you missed.
I run four blogs and co-write on one.
There is no doubt that the ones I’m REALLY passionate about get all the attention.
I’ve already decided to close one, since I haven’t updated it since last summer and I’m not totally sure about another one.
If you are passionate I’m also sure you can find the time to write
Great post!
At a certain point, you just have to know when to let go. Sticking with the blog you are passionate about was a great decision and, as far as the other ones are concerned, as long as you have a hosting account and they receive visitors from the search engines, you don’t really have to close them, simply post a message stating that they will no longer be updated and allow readers to take advantage of the information you’ve posted thus far.

From an SEO perspective you have to watch out for a couple of things when running several blogs, especially if they overlap in content and you cross-link between them.
I’m in the middle of a post on this very subject for Sciencetext.com and will let you have the link as soon as it’s ready.

Okay, I wasn’t going to post this till tomorrow, but seeing as I’ve got you all fired up (hahahah) here’s my post on the disadvantages of running multiple blogs. I’m open to corrections and criticisms of my logic, of course.

Of course more blogs more money :> But its not good i tihnk to mkae too much of it its better to focus on few ones and make for them best valuvale posts possible.
Right now I only have the one blog but I have ideas for 2 others for certain, and ethereal ideas for 2 others.
At this point I’m still working on the one but after I’ve reached the year mark I might start another. I don’t write 3 liner posts so my writing takes me a while to complete, which is why all my time is taken up with the one blog currently.
A very good post! You’d be surprised how many people wrote only about the advantages, or only the disadvantages. There’s definitely a lot to consider, so I’ve bookmarked this for when I’m ready to think about branching out.
