Regardless of what level of blogging success you are achieving currently, you probably want to be doing even better. What’s involved with that higher level really depends on your goals. Maybe it means making more money, drawing more traffic, generating more business through your blog, etc. Whatever your ultimate goal may be, you can make a push to do better.
First, you’ll need to take an objective look at your blog. What is it that you can do more effectively? We all struggle with some things, finding what needs to be improved is an important part of success. It can be difficult to look at your blog this way since you probably spend so much time working on it. If that’s the case, take the time to email some of your regular readers and ask for their input on what could be improved.
Here are some items that many of us struggle with. Improvements in any one of them can help you to achieve more:
1 – Content – Of course, content is probably the most important part of any blog. Take a look at your posts and see how they compare in quality and frequency to other blogs in your niche. Try to compare to blogs that are already achieving the level of success that you want to achieve.
2 – Search Engine Optimization – Many bloggers aren’t very familiar with SEO, and as a result a few fairly simple changes can make a noticeable difference in search engine traffic. The theme your blog uses can affect its search engine-friendliness. WordPress users can visit CourtneyTuttle.com and browse through the many free themes that he has optimized for search engines.
3 – Social Media – One of the best resources for bloggers to grow their audience is social media. Sites like Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit and Delicious can send thousands of visitors in a short period of time. Yes, this traffic may not be the highest quality traffic available, but it’s great for exposure and drawing links.
4 – Networking – A strong network is crucial to blogging success. Networking is pretty easy, but it takes time and effort. You can start building a stronger network by commenting on other blogs, using social media, writing guest posts, and simply emailing other bloggers.
5 – Design – How does your blog compare to others in your niche as far as design is concerned? While a standout design is not necessary, the most successful blogs will usually have a unique theme. Once again, compare your blog to those that are achieving the level of success that you want and see how you compare.
6 – Community – Each blog has its own community. How strong is yours? Loyal readers and commentors bring a lot of value to a blogger. If your community is weak find a way to get readers more involved. Contests and linking to readers are common methods for building a community.
Hopefully after looking at these 6 aspects you’ve seen 1 or 2 areas that you can improve. Don’t necessarily try to improve everything at once, focus on what you think is most important at the moment. Once you know where you want to improve take some time to consider a strategy that will work for you.

great post Steven, very informative
Thanks! I hope you can use something for yourself.
I have have found many things ^_^
Blogging is no longer what it started out to be and you are quite right that most of us do not know many of the technology that goes into present day blogging and to the extent get stuck. Take SEO, you now need to be a trained webmaster to be able to manage this aspect and if you are just a simple blogger, you do not generate enough traffic.
There are some wonderful blogs out there with hardly any visitors because the blogs are very exclusive in their content. The people who will be interested simply do not even know about such blogs. On the other hand there are blogs which contain such useless stuff but generating huge volume of traffic which is heart breaking for bloggers who are serious about their content.
The ideas given here are no doubt very useful but, I believe that SEO makes or breaks a blog.
I have asked you privately to stop using keywords in the name field when you comment on this blog. This is the last time that I will simply change the name on one of your comments to “Anonymous”. Consider this your last warning… after this, I will delete all comments that do not adhere to our comment policy and ban any I.P. addresses you use to comment.
Your paid advertisements are not wanted and do not belong here.
I couldn’t of said it better myself. Glad to see your back into the mix!

Not all types of social media will get you links. For me, not a single post that went hot on SU got significant backlinks.
You’re right. StumbleUpon isn’t known for drawing a lot of links. But it also depends on the type of post. I’ve had some posts do well on StumbleUpon and get a number of links. That’s not to say that one type of post is better than another, but some are just more likely to draw inbound links.
Awesome tips. Thanks for this:)
