Some of you may have already found this plugin but for everyone else, here is a WordPress plugin that can really save you some time.

If you run several blogs then you know what a pain it is upgrade each time a new version comes out. Well, there is another way. I downloaded and installed InstantUpgrade on a blog that desperately needed an upgrade and was able to upgrade WordPress 2.1.2 to 2.3.1 in about ten seconds.

InstantUpgrade is a plugin for WordPress, which will perform automatic upgrades of a WordPress installation with a single click. You can upgrade to the latest WordPress version, or you can upgrade to a version of your choice. The plugin downloads the chosen WordPress version, unpacks it, deletes the old files and inserts the new ones. All these actions don’t require funky PHP extensions — they are all handled by the InstantUpgrade plugin.

This plugin might be of special interest for you if you installed WordPress for a friend or a customer with no knowledge of FTP, PHP and MySQL. But of course, everybody else will surely also apprechiate easy and instant upgrades.

This sounds fantastic, but does it take care of all the correct permissions and file ownership?

That would be my biggest worry!

Hmmm, doesn’t work with Fantastico installs, and if you want to be able to edit your files again (as they will now be owned by the webserver) you should:

you have the option to perform a chmod resetting, which will make all the files claimed by InstantUpgrade writable by you. You should download them, delete them on the server and upload them again.

Don’t think it’s for me!

I installed a different automatic update plugin for wordpress and couldn’t get it to work on my test site so I never tried it on my live site….I might give this one a try, thanks David!

InstantUpgrade is totally awesome… It has worked flawlessly for me through several upgrades. Just have to remember to keep doing those backups just in case.

I just recently upgrade a few of my blogs the other week and surprisingly the whole procedure wasn’t that bad.

But I think you make a great point in regards to clients and friends that you’ve set WordPress up for.

Good find and I’ll keep this in the back of my head. *nod*

I have no knowledge of FTP, PHP and MySQL. and will have to depend on someone to help me. I shall share this with that someone and see what happens! So far my blogs have been quite amateurish and I need to start coming up to the general standards and perhaps this will help.
