News and Notes From the Blogosphere | PureBlogging

Just a couple of things that I wanted to comment on:

WordPress Plugins Competition
Weblog Tools Collection recently held a WordPress Plugin Competition and is still taking votes on which of the Plugins you like the most. PureBlogging was a sponsor for the competition and there are some really amazing entries this year. Go check them out and cast your vote.

Comment Relish May be Dangerous
As many of you know I have recommended the WordPress Plugin Comment Relish in the past, well, it appears that I may have made a mistake. Chris Garrett now reports that the plugin may be dangerous. I have disabled the plugin and recommend you do the same.

Romlet Design Award Winner
I was informed this morning that PureBlogging has been selected as a Romlet Design Award Winner! Pretty cool considering I didn’t even know there was a competition. If you’re not familiar with Romlet, it’s the neat little icons in the sidebar on the right under the heading “Recent Referrers”. I installed the widget a few days ago just to check it out.

There’s a Scumbag Among Us
I have received a number of emails about a blogger who held a completely bogus contest. I’m not going to link to him but you can read more about the situation at Contest Blogger, Roberta Ferguson, and Michael Kwan. Just goes to show you… if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

That guy who held the fake contest must be feeling pretty silly now. What a fool. We could do with less people like that in the blogosphere.

Definitely, to me the whole thing seemed fishy from the beginning which is why I didn’t participate. What he doesn’t realize is he has killed his online reputation, which he will never be able to get back.

Yeah, it seems something’s not right there.. How could givaway $2500 like that? The way he tricks the bloggers is bad… Really bad..

I didn’t dare touch that, I knew it was too good to be true. He certainly was lazy, but it has sprung up some funny blog titles that would not be acceptable but in this case.

Thanks for the link, David. That guy is a total loser. I couldn’t believe that he tried that nonsense. Good thing for ContestBlogger calling him out for what he is.

I had no idea that the comment relish plugin could be bad, I’ll have to disable that asap. Now, I must go back to welcoming people to my site the old fashioned way ;)

You’re welcome. I love Comment Relish so I really hated to see that news.

I agree, Webd360, he has definitely killed his online reputation. Would that stop him from coming back under an alias, though?

I have heard that Comment Relish can create high loads on servers because it has to peruse your entire table to check for that commentator’s email address - on an established site, that can create enough of a load to actually crash the server!

There was an updated version that supposedly fixed that issue… but apparently it didn’t quite do the job.

John Chow had to disable the plugin shortly after installing it because of the stress on his server. Most blogs do not have enough commentors to notice the query time, but large blogs with thousands of people who have commented will notice it take a bit for the query to determine if the commentor is a first timer or not.

That’s a shame that about the comment relish plugin. Maybe something else will be developed. David, you should keep your automated email handy in case you can use it again. I thought your email was worded very well, and even though it was automated it still was a great message to send to new visitors. Actually, I kept a copy of it to borrow a few things from.

That really stinks about the fake contest….which is worse, someone like that, or a splogger? Talk about zero credibility.

David, thanks for the info on comment relish, too. I hadn’t installed it yet, and actually it seems like it shouldn’t be an issue for smaller blogs that don’t get a lot of comments. I see that Patches posted an update for it though, so I’ll check that out, thanks!

the scumbag announced the winner who I suppose is himself only

But there’s one thing
How did some 400 bloggers came into his trap?
He runs a new blog
How can u expect him making 2,500$ from it?

I haven’t been having any problems with Comment Relish and will continue to run it unless I see any slow down on my blog.
