Traffic is essential to every website on the web. 80% of internet users find what they are looking for from Search Engines. Are you effectively marketing to your share of those users?
Search Engine Optimization efforts are futile. SEO is both an art and a science. Just like building a home or commercial building the blueprints are the most important and vital piece of the puzzle. If you don’t build your SEO efforts from the beginning the process of optimizing your site will take longer. If your site is already built your SEO efforts need to be implemented carefully to gain success.
Effective Pay Per Click Marketing could supplement your success until your SEO efforts kick in.
If you’re a hands on person like myself, you may think you can just jump in, throw up some PPC ads and your good to go however with the rising costs of PPC advertising and the technology controlling it, this attitude could be detrimental to your success.
To run a successful PPC Campaign you need to do research and look at statistical data and analyze your market. Who are your competitors, what are they doing, where are they advertising, what are they advertising, how much are they spending! By having this knowledge you will save more money on your Search Marketing Efforts and you will Make More Money Online!
Here are some very simple yet telling stats!
| May-07 | Jun-07 | % Chg. vs. Prev. Month | |
| Total Internet Population | 100.0% | 100.0% | N/A |
| Google Sites | 50.7% | 49.5% | -1.2 |
| Yahoo! Sites | 26.4% | 25.1% | -1.3 |
| Microsoft Sites | 10.3% | 13.2% | 2.9 |
From the first glance at this information you can see that MSN search has gained some ground in the Search World. By digging a little deeper you will find out that MSN Search Query Volume is up 36% and it is because they have launched their Live Search Club Program (a program that rewards users of Live Search). With this data you can make a Business Decision to move advertising dollars to take advantage of this gain in traffic with MSN’s low priced PPC costs!
By digging even deeper you could also find out that Americans Searched 8.0 Billion Times on Google and even though their Market Share is down, their Search Query Volume is up, what does that mean to me (More Long Tail Searches!) and what does that mean (Lower PPC Costs!) If you analyze your data correctly you can also see that Google’s Market Share is up 10% over last year and that alone should tell you something!
All this data is public information but it takes time to gather it all, process it and then react.
To learn more about setting up an Effective Search Marketing Campaign I have created a series that takes you step by step through setting up a Pay Per Click Campaign.

Thanks Darin. I haven’t put $$ into PPC advertising for my blog yet and that was a good tip to look into MSN at this time.
(***your link to your PPC Campaign in your last sentence needs to be changed, it results in 404)
I have updated the link so it should work properly now, thanks JoLynn!

Love the research data. I find articles to be more interesting when they can back up the story with data & facts. Well done.

Great Article, Darrin! I found it really interesting about PPC Campaign, but I have to wait until I have CC to pay it.
I think PPC ads are one of the most cost-effective forms of online ads (unless you go crazy with the bids). They’re great because you can use them with any budget.
even the crazy bids can be good for your business depending on your margin and ROAS. Example one of my clients sells a product for $999.99 – Profit on that is $600.00 but it’s a Mapped Priced Product so they can’t change the retail price … so they are stuck to making $600.00 a sale … and they are willing to pay top dollar to be #1 in their crazy market at $4.00 Per Click!
I never tried PPC campaigns ,thought most of them are click frauds.
Direct Advertising gives you much targeted content…
PPC is not all click fraud. If you choose quality keywords and place relevant advertising you can do very well. Most of your click fraud happens in the content network anyway!
excellently written article, I have never used or created a PPC campaign but I know I will in the near future.

Contextual ads operate much like traditional pay-per-click search engine ads. You bid for placement and pay a fee each time someone clicks on your ad, but instead of your ads appearing in search engine results, they appear on web pages on other sites.
I like to compare contextual ads to ads you might find in a magazine. Pick up any special niche magazine and you’ll see ads for products or services related to the subject matter of the magazine as well as ads on subjects that might be of interest to readers in the magazine’s subscriber demographics.
Want a good reason to try contextual advertising? Think volume and exposure. Consider all the sites you visit each day on the Web. Most of these are candidates for contextual advertising. Cpxclick.com claims to have partnerships with over 500 search engine sites in the system already. For a company wanting widespread exposure on the web, I can’t think of another medium that has the potential reach of contextual advertising.
Google has now added different Ad Mediums in the mix. This should be interesting to see the shift from old media to new media and how many networks will follow!
Darin
duh … Ad Media in the mix …
Good article but people should also take a close look at using article marketing to get traffic to their sites.
Not only does it give you another source in case the SEs drop you in rankings but it can also reinforce your existing rankings.
