All successful bloggers have been able to create quality content for their readers. Unfortunately, creating quality content doesn’t guarantee success for a blog. Without readers to notice the quality of the writing, nothing is gained. If you’re having trouble getting readers to notice you, consider using some of the methods listed below. They all focus on getting your articles in front of new audiences, which will increase your exposure and your subscriber numbers.
1 - Article Directories
One of the oldest methods for marketing yourself through articles is to post them on article directories. There are dozens of directories online with thousands of articles that other webmasters are free to use on their own site. You give them some great content and in return you will get to display a brief author bio at the end of your article with a link to your website.
This used to be the #1 way to spread your articles across the internet. Recently though, search engines have aimed to keep duplicate content out of the SERPs (search engine results pages), which means your article distribution with this method will rarely result in a lot of search engine traffic. Even worse, if the article is also posted on your website you run the risk of search engines identifying your website as having duplicate content. Also, the links from sites duplicating your content are unlikely to boost your search engine rankings.
That being said, article directories still have value. The key to using them successfully is to only use articles that you are not posting on your own site. This way you will not be penalized for having duplicate content on your site/blog. Even if the inbound links from your bio are not helping your rankings, they can still be a good source of click-through traffic.
Some of the most popular article directories are:
2 – Write for Other Blogs
Most bloggers spend so much time focusing on creating content for their own blog that they neglect one of the best ways for reaching a new audience. Regardless of what topic you blog about there are probably plenty of others that have a similar audience. By writing a post for another blog you instantly increase your visibility and name recognition while potentially gaining new readers for your own blog.
Every blogger has a need for valuable content (original articles only, not something that’s already posted on your website), and if you can offer high-quality writing to another blogger they are likely to accept. Start with the blogs you read on a daily or weekly basis and look for those that might be a good fit with your writing. You can find blogs who are looking for content at Guest-Blogger.com (and create your own account while your there).
3 – Blog Carnivals
Blog carnivals are probably the easiest of any of these methods. A blog carnival is a group of posts on a common topic that is published at a host blog. Anyone can host a blog carnival on any subject they choose. The carnival will include a title, brief description, and a link for every participating post. By submitting your post to a blog carnival you are essentially getting a link to a post on your blog. You can find blog carnivals on your topic of interest at BlogCarnival.com. Subscribe to their feed and you will be sent each carnival that’s posted so you’ll always be able to submit your posts. It takes only a few seconds and it gives you a link to one of your articles.
4 – Ezines
With the rise of blogging the popularity of ezines has dropped off a bit. Still there are thousands of ezines that are being sent out to targeted readers. In fact, with the focus on blogs there’s probably less competition to get your articles published in ezines. Some ezines have large distribution while others may be a waste of time. Go to some of the ezine directories listed below to find some that may be interested in your articles.
5 – Syndication
Plenty of websites are looking for fresh content that is regularly updated. For these sites article syndication is a good solution. With Idea Marketers’ syndication service a webmaster can find a writer that they want to publish on their site, and then whenever the writer publishes a new article it will be updated automatically. Many website owners prefer this hands-free approach to keep continually changing content on their site. As a writer you can offer to have your articles syndicated on other websites. The service from Idea Marketers is free and it’s easy for everyone involved.
6 – Online Publications
Most industries have at least a few online publications. They are very similar to a traditional magazine except they are based online instead of in print. Every so often they will publish new articles on subjects that are relevant to their readers. Almost every online publication accepts articles to be considered for use.
By being published on these sites you will have your writing seen by a large number of very targeted readers. The larger the audience of the publication the harder it will be to get your articles posted.
Some of the leading online publications in web design and blogging are:
7 - Traditional Print Magazines and Trade Journals
Don’t limit your article promotion to simply online methods. Many magazines accept article submissions from freelancers. When you’re submitting an article to any publication, online or off, be careful not to appear as though you’re only do it to promote your business. Write a quality article and let your writing do the advertising.
To submit your article to magazines, visit their website and look for submission guidelines. Some will have very specific guidelines on article length, topic and format. Others will not list all of their requirements, but that doesn’t mean that they’re open to anything. Read at least a few issues to familiarize yourself with the type of articles they publish and take that into consideration before you write and submit anything.
8 – Newspapers
Newspapers can be particularly effective if your business is targeting customers in a specific local area. Follow the same guidelines list above: don’t blatantly market yourself or your business, submit high quality writing, and become familiar with articles that get published. Depending on where you are located, local newspapers may be much easier to get published in than national magazines.
9 – Ebooks
An easy way to distribute your articles is to create a PDF ebook of past articles that you have written (all articles should be focused on related topics). You can then give the ebook away as a free gift to your website visitors and give it away to other website owners to distribute from their sites. To get information about creating PDFs, visit:
Pick a few of these methods that you think may work well for you and implement them. Good luck!

Great article David. I recently had about 30 articles published and was going to submit them but since I put them on my site as a resource I’m having second thoughts now. Maybe modified or summarized versions would be better to submit?
Crazy how the article directory days are sort of passe. Article writing and submission used to be the #1 way to get the word out; especially in niches. Sigh
Yeah, Steven did a great job with this article.
I think modified or summarized versions would be better… you don’t want to have duplicate content out there.
Good info David.
A thing to mention to is that you do not want to submit an article that you already posted on your blog for the duplicate article factor in SEO.
I know what Bloggeries is saying about article directory day being passe, but you with the made for adsense site popping up and being fulled by article directories, you can get backlinks to your site with the anchor text you choose.
Very true… some of those MFA backlinks may even have decent value.
Funny how everyone thinks you wrote this - even though there is the intro at the top!
But is it still my bad for not paying more attention.
But is it still my bad for not paying more attention.
I’ve always been reluctant guestblogging, for the pure and simple reason that I’m lazy, and selfish when it comes to my blog. However, I’m warming to the idea, and will guestblog (as well as allowed to be guestblog on) soon!
I am sorry I did not read the italic wording at teh top. Thanks for the information Steven. By the way, is Vandelay Website Design a sister company of Vandelay Industries?
I was thinking the same thing!
David,
Thanks a lot for posting the article!
Bloggeries,
I’ve used modified versions in the past to avoid duplicate content. I haven’t used it enough to really have an opinion on how it worked, but that would also be my suggestion. I would also make sure to change up the title of the article too.
Tyson,
No, we’re not a sister company to Vandelay Industries. But if they want me to design a website for the latex production facility I would be happy to.
I believe they have a new product that will help seal oil tankers. Contact Cosmo, he is heading up the project.
nice list for ezines and articles - I tend to use them for support content only if I start a new website or blog

I wasn’t going to comment on this article because I am sick of hearing about it. But Some article submissions and PR web sites allow people to subscribe to specific categories related to their web site as RSS feeds. If a website subscribes to the RSS feed for the category that you have submitted your article to, your article and back link will not only show up on the website that you have submitted to, it will also automatically appear on all of the websites that subscribe to the RSS feed of that category.
Hey Steven, excellent post!
I’ve used Ezinearticles quite a lot in the past, makes me think I should probably submit some new articles soon.
Online publications are great, not easy to get listed, but definitely worth it
I also use Ezinearticle and I get many backlinks
But sometimes my article kicked because too many grammar error (they have high standard, didn’t they) And Now I have no intention submit there…
Maybe when I have free time I will try again
Hi Jon,
Thanks for your feedback. You’re right, online publications present a lot of competition to get your articles posted. I think a lot of bloggers would have more success with this if they gave it a shot, but the competition keeps them from even trying.
I’ve submitted to Blog Carnivals before.
Here’s a question….we’ve talked about the importance of avoiding duplicate content and not posting the same article to an article directory that is already on your site….well what about this — blogcarnival.com creates their own cache, and they have cached several of my articles that I have submitted to carnivals. Therefore, when you search google, you could end up seeing a BC cache of my article listed in the results above the actual listing of my article on my blog.
I haven’t found any answers to the following online:
I have now subscribed to a few of those PR Services …
Darin
great article, bookmarked and added to my useful resources
JoLynn,
I have been using several blog carnivals over the last few months and I’ve had no problems with duplicate content issues. I’ve actually gotten a lot of my pages out of Google’s supplemental index during that time.
The carnivals that I have used have either just included the title of the article and a link, or at the most they have included a brief excerpt. In any case the carnival links back to your original post, which tells the search engines that your post is the original.
My advice would be to test it yourself and see if you have any problems. Keep track of which carnivals and which posts you use. A few weeks later check to see if your post is indexed and try to see if it ranks ahead of the carnival.
I would think it is possible for a carnival page to rank higher than yours, but it would probably not be that common.
Hi Vandelay,
Thanks for your feedback…it’s not the blog who is hosting the carnival that is the issue…you’re correct that they only post a link to my original article. The issue is with the blog carnival “company” itself.
The site who organizes all of the blog carnivals (http://blogcarnival.com) has a cache of articles that have been submitted to the various, individual carnivals. I’ve found that visitors have come to my site through the blogcarnival.com’s cache because their cache of my post ranked higher than my original post in google.
So my concern has been whether or not this was a duplicate content issue.

Excellent tips Steven I will certainly be checking out guestblogger.
I’ve heard of most of these- but, I really do like the ebook idea! I think it might be worth a try..
Unique content is king! As a directory owner, one of my main concerns is duplicate content. I have found one company, Unique content wizard, that probably does the best job of all of the auto submission services.
Very Informative stuff.I am going to follow all this to get traffic for my feature Post.
