Keep Them Coming
Content of course is the driving force of any blog, you either have it or you don’t. No matter what your niche or non-niche is, it is your content that grabs a reader. But do you have side factors that are scaring readers away? With this post I am starting a series called “Keep Them Coming” that dives into this very subject.

Item 1: Do Not Display Skim Stats
If you want to be successful and “make money online” as most say, or just be successful at having many readers, you have to continue to gain new readership. So flat out you have to impress the heck out of a first time reader. Great stats are something that come with time on a blog with great content. Eventually, great content will bring you loyal readers and all of a sudden your Technorati Rank shoots down, your Google Page Rank shoots up, and your RSS Subscriber totals increment like crazy. But until that happens, do not display stats that will scare away new readers! All of these widgets and plugins are very attractive and easy to use, but unless you have stats worth bragging about, hold off and wait until you do.

Your Alternatives
You have to remove those stat items, but those links they come with are very important. I’m sure there are a magnitude of different stat plugins and widgets out there, but here are a few examples with the common ones I see. Instead of the feedburner widget showing less that 50 readers, have an eye catching rss image that links to your feed. Instead of one of the technorati plugins displaying your really high rank , just have a favorite me link. If your Alexa rating is really high, do not even display it at all. My suggested thresholds for displaying this info would be as follows: feedburner [50 or more]; technorati rank [50k or less]; alexa [100k or less]. Anything outside of these thresholds may give an inexperienced feeling to the blog and scare potential readers away.

Conclusion
A new reader came to your site byway of some kind of referral. Whether it just be a link, backlink, or reference on another blog or perhaps a google search result. The door has been opened, and your referred page has been delivered to them. If they like it, and I mean really like it, they still may never come back and be a repeat reader. The post they just read was amazing, but they looked at your widgets/plugins in your sidebar as well and noticed that the reporting numbers are very unfavorable. So in my mind that would say that even though this page or post was excellent, the normal content must not be any good since the stats are not very impressive. So I basically just read a diamond in the rough and there is no need to continue reading anything else. This is where you will see a 1 page visit entry and exit in your reporting logs.

This kind of view of things is used all the time! Ever notice that half filled tip jar at restaurants? Did you know that most places will not start with an empty tip jar. Somebody walking by a tip jar that is already half full, is most likely to sheepishly tip out some themselves, where if it was an empty tip jar, they may not of at all (*after all, nobody else did*).

Always try to look at your blog from an outsider’s perspective and see if there is anything that would make you not interested in it.

My name is RJ “Bobs” Matthis. David has granted me the great opportunity of guest blogging on his site. I will be chiming in from time to time on many subjects but primarily focusing on an infinite series of “Blog Scare Factors” that can impair and/or delay your growth. Last week, I decided to offer guest bloggers an opportunity to contribute to PureBlogging. Since that post I have received many more requests than expected so I felt it was necessary to develop a few guidelines for guest bloggers to follow.

First of all, guest bloggers will start out as contributors so that all posts can be reviewed for quality before publication. Once I am reasonably sure of what I can expect from a guest blogger, full author rights will be granted. A select few may even be granted editor or administrator rights in the future.

I also plan to limit the number of posts on PureBlogging to approximately 3 to 5 per day. Any more than that and I think we risk overloading readers with too much information. I also want to avoid a situation where there are 10 posts one day and none the next. In the beginning that will be easy because I will be reviewing each article submitted and can schedule them as I see fit. I will work on something to simply things in the future.

Just a quick note to let everyone know that I have deactivated the MyAvatars plugin because the images no longer display. In case you are not familiar with MyAvatars, it is a Wordpress plugin that allows you display avatars from MyBlogLog in your comments.

There have been reports that changes are on the way for MyBlogLog and maybe this is a sign that they are indeed moving forward. I hate that MyAvatars is no longer working but I’m excited to see what MyBlogLog has up it’s sleeve.

UPDATE: As of now, everything seems to be working again and I have reactivated the plugin. Thanks goes to Napolux for letting me know!

Did you participate in the Group Writing Project at ProBlogger? If you didn’t, you should have.

The post that I submitted didn’t make it to the front page of Digg like some of the other submissions but I did see a little increase in traffic. I found a lot of great new blogs and I can’t tell you how many links I got from participating. In fact, the links are still coming in. It was great experience and I believe my blog benefited greatly from the exposure.

If you chose not to participate, don’t worry because there is another project going on that could prove to be just as beneficial for your blog. Plus, you could win your share of the $10,000 prize pool!

Brian Clark of Copyblogger has announced that he is having a group copywriting contest. The contest will be judged by Brian, Seth Godin, and Darren Rowse.

Get all the details from Brian’s post: Copywriting Contest: $10,000 in Prizes for Irresistible Offers.

Writing effective post titles is an important part of marketing your blog, maybe the most important part.

Surveys suggest that most people only scan what they read on the web so your titles may be the only thing that they read. If it interests them, they will read more. If not, they move on to the next source.

Your title needs to grab the reader’s attention, motivate the reader to click, and make the reader want to see more. Let’s look at a few things you should keep in mind when creating post titles.

  1. Grab Attention
You only get one chance to create a first impression and that chance is the post title. Your title must give the reader a reason to read your article.
  2. Be Descriptive
Your titles can be enticing, teasing, or informational but should always describe exactly what your readers will find or learn if they read your article.
  3. Use Keywords
Your titles should be written for human readers but don’t completely ignore the search engine robots. You should use keywords that people would use if they were searching for your article in the search engines. Just make sure that the keywords are representative of your article’s content.
  4. Keep it Simple
The most effective titles are short, simple and easy to understand. Major search engines also give higher relevance to the first few words you use in the title, and they display only up to 8-10 words in their search engine result pages.
  5. Be Representative
Your title should accurately reflect the content of your article. While it is important that titles are as catchy as possible you must deliver what the title promises or you risk losing credibility.
