Blogging Basics Part Two: What's the word? | PureBlogging

What’s the word? The word is your blog is whatever you make it. Meaning, whatever your topic of choice is what you blog about. You’re in control, so if the content is quality, readers will come. Whether it be music, making money, SEO, gossip, or whathaveyou.

If you intend to stick to one topic then tell your readers. If you don’t have many readers, see this post. Some people like to make several topics the point of their blog. This is a great idea and allows you enough space not to get bored with blogging.

Centralizing your blog to one topic does have it’s advantages, though. If your genre is blogging about blogging, then those who do just that, will often link to you, if you are experienced. I consider myself an expert in being a beginner, thus, I’m open to learning everything about everything. (You should see my rss feeds)

What I’m trying to communicate to you now is that if you are an expert on flowers, then blog about it. If you’ve had no experience installing car stereos, could you tell someone how to do it? I could tell you where the stereo should go, but as far as installation goes, I have no clue.

Blog about what you love and chances are, like-minded people will find you. It’s not as easy as linking to big named bloggers and hoping they’ll notice. I’ve went out of my way to find other music-related blogs and am currently trying to fill void in the music community. A lot of bloggers will not go out of their way to find you.

The moral of the story is, be interesting and the readers will be interested :)

Very Good Post … I totally agree on choosing a Niche.

When I started my blog I wasn’t sure what to blog about … then I thought to myself … why not blog about what I do and love … Search Engine Marketing … and Darin.CC was born!

It’s important to pick a niche and stick to it. You don’t want to overload your readers with too much on different topics … they will loose interest and not be as in tune and in touch with your blog.

If you really need to blog about different topics … then start multiple blogs … just make sure you don’t bite off more than you can chew.

Remember the old saying … Do’er of All, Master of None can actually hurt you in the long run.

Just don’t stretch yourself thin! Pick a topic and try to become a leader in your industry!

Darin

P.S. Great conversation here … I’m loving it!

Great article Roberta. I’ve found having numerous blogs is really a help. I love blogging about web 2.0 applications and as I am trying to break into this space with my own projects, it really is a great way to get my thoughts and ideas out there.

On the other hand, sometimes I just feel like writing about Battlestar Galactica or write a tutorial on how to get Ruby on Rails running on a Windows system. That’s when my personal blog really comes into play. I can still write the articles I love and place them in a spot that still gets a decent amount of traffic, but it won’t ruin my niche reader’s experience over at Betaflow.

Thanks Darin, I’m glad you’re enjoying the conversation. I never knew that blogging about blogging could bring so much of a community vibe, this rocks.

Thanks Michael, I’m finding that when I created RobertaFerguson.com, I just mainly blogged about music-related topics. It was then that I erased everything on there and kept it centralized to Earsucker. But, if there was something that I couldn’t see covering on my music site, I’d stick it on my personal blog.

Hey thanks for stopping by my blog, I appreciate it!

I agree with writing about different topics. I feel that if I were to specifically limit myself to one little niche, that I would get bored with the whole thing and probably stop writing eventually.

I am in that ever growing pool of “make money with your blog” bloggers, but I enjoy it so it keeps me motivated. However as an added bonuse, I love to fish and I love trucks…so I bring a little country into the whole mix and I sometimes relate my blogging experiences to my personal hobbies.

It’s just fun to write about things that you like…that way it doesn’t sound like you’re making it up, you know what I mean?

I get ya Ryan, while it’s cool to have just one topic, some people just need to write about a little more than just one thing.

That’s what’s cool about the whole thing, you run the show :)

Thanks Jake, I reviewed his blog in exchange for a link, but he never answered the question that I asked twice. So, I’m starting to think that dude is just in it for the money.
