Hey, good post. Here's another way to get readers.

Have a 1000th comment contest and offer the winner $100 or $200. While people surf around the blog for posts to comment on, they also find out that the blog has good content. And they stay.

It worked on me. That's how I discovered this blog.

All the widgets are 'look at me, look at me' being broadcast to people who are just finding you. It is kind of mentioning where you went or where you are going to school and trying to get acceptance. It is good to back up your success with some stats, but if you are really that good. You do not need to.

Now, that was some great tips. I too have become shy with blogs that have widgets that display bad information about their blog. I use to have them on mine. I took them off due to this. I still display my site hits on it but that is pretty much all that i display. My site hits are set up so that even if I am the only reader, everytime my page is refreshed is counts as another hit. Cheating? Maybe but the readers don't know this and they think that I have a lot of hits to my site when in reality, all you really have to do is refresh the pay a few times a day.

I used to display it when I first started blogging but realized immediately how terrible it looked to have so few subscribers. Once you're over 100 though, it's nice to have it displayed.

I agree. I've visited some blogs and saw that Feedburner widget saying it has 2 subscribers... very bad. That's why I've never used those widgets, although my blog has nearly 100 subscribers.
