As bloggers (or any webmaster for that matter) it is important to be as up-to–date as possible on the factors that search engines use to determine search results. SEOMoz released an extremely detailed document entitled “Search Engine Ranking Factors V2” that outlines the opinions of 37 SEO experts regarding how Google’s algorithm works.
While they do not try to reverse-engineer Google’s algorithm, it is still a valuable look at what factors the experts believe can help and hurt your SEO efforts. Below I have listed the top 5 positive and negative factors as determined by the study:
Top 5 Positive Factors
- Keyword Use in Title Tag
- Global Link Popularity of Site
- Anchor Text of Inbound Link
- Link Popularity within the Site
- Age of Site
Top 5 Negative Factors
- Server is Often Inaccessible to Bots
- Content Very Similar or Duplicate of Existing Content on the Index
- External Links to Low Quality/Spam sites
- Participation in Link Schemes or Actively Selling Links
- Duplicate Title/Meta Tags on Many Pages
Of course this short list doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the mountain of information provided. Be sure to check out the entire document at SEOMoz.

SEO has always puzzled me do you think its possible to get listed in the top of search engines without worrying about optimizing your content and just posting your content about it?
I meant to say just post your content and not worrying so much about seo do you think you can still get to the top?
Yes, I think you can but you can also increase your chances of being at or near the top by having a basic SEO strategy.
Thanks for finding time out for listing the results of the study…very helpful.
I’d have to agree with with regards to bigrayvin’s question. No site could really hope to be noticed without having an SEO strategy (in 2007 alone, 12.8 billion web pages were added to the INternet!)
